The valley · No. 03

Ten hectares, and a hidden valley.

A working smallholding in the bocage of Ger — small pastures, wooded banks, and a valley that changes with every season.

The heart of the place

A valley that turns with the year.

Behind the buildings the land drops into a hidden valley — the defining feature of La Volée. In winter, snow lies over its undulating curves. In spring, the wild cherries explode into blossom. Summer brings ponds for swimming, and in autumn the beeches turn gold.

It’s the special place that is so restorative; everyone finds their own favourite part to walk or sit in.

What grows here

Woods, water and orchard.

Pine and deciduous woodland on the slopes

The woods

About a third is forested — pines, deciduous woodland, and ash and willow plantations, with a wooden viewing platform beneath the holly trees.

The spring-fed top pond with water hawthorn

The ponds

Several ponds, including a spring-fed top pond home to carp and water hawthorn. In summer there are ponds set aside just for swimming.

The orchard

A traditional cider-apple orchard out front, plus cherry trees and a fruit orchard in development. Organic land, rich with wildflowers, mushrooms and chestnuts.

Horses roaming freely in the green valley
Sharing the land

Free-roaming horses, quiet swimming spots.

The horses roam freely through the valley, with designated horse-free zones around the summer swimming ponds and the top carp pond — so people and herd each have their space.

It’s organic land throughout, especially lovely for wildflowers in spring and for mushrooms and chestnuts in autumn.

  • Wooden viewing platform beneath the holly trees
  • Future plans: potager, wildflower meadow and beehives
  • Chestnut coppicing and natural-build shelters and dens

Walk it for yourself.

Stay a few nights and let the valley set the pace.
